Kayak Guide Assistant

The Kayak Guide Assistant helps visitors on Park Ranger led guided kayak programs, beginner paddles and excursions. The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge consists of 9,000 acres of open water, saltmarshes and creeks in the Hudson River estuary and provide unique and crucial habitat for a richness of flora and fauna. Kayak Guide Assistants help the NPS allow the public to access this remarkable natural resource in a safe and environmentally conscious way Key responsibilities include: Greeting park visitors. Providing general information to the public. Assist the public with fitting PFDs, adjusting kayak seats, moving kayaks, as well as assisting the team with safety protocols that ensure safe paddles. Paddle with the team when required. Provide on-shore information about water safety and the natural history of Jamaica Bay.

Knowledge of Jamaica Bay and program schedule. Ability to work as part of the kayak team. Ability to communicate effectively and assist visitors. Possess skills as a competent paddler or have an ability to become a competent paddler.

Assist park staff in protecting the spectacular and valuable resources of GATEWAY NATIONAL RECREATION AREA. Provide access to the public to water resources via kayak trips.

Volunteers receive training in National Park Service mission and policies. Volunteers are eligible for additional job-related trainings as available, as well as technical kayak skills and safety protocols. Volunteers have the opportunity to enjoy the scenery, wildlife, and cultural resources of GATEWAY NATIONAL RECREATION AREA. 

Number of volunteers needed: 5 Age requirement: 16+ Starting Date: May 20, 2026

Commitment: 3+ hours per week.
