Museum Technician - Volunteer

Description

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in making a time commitment of 12 hours per week for 3 months to assist in museum cataloging and slide rehousing and storing as well as data collection  

Camp Nelson National Monuments Museum Technician position provides valuable support in preserving the archeological collection here at camp nelson by cataloging, documenting and rehousing our archeological collection and slides to preserve them in appropriate storage and creating detailed spreadsheets for future reference. Furthermore, the Museum Technician position helps Camp Nelson become a more accessible national monument with their focus on detailed record keeping and relocation of our archeological collection and slides.  

Duties

Cataloging & Documentation: Assist in the systematic cataloging of archaeological artifacts, ensuring accurate descriptions are recorded 

Data Entry: Input information from archeological collection into primary database, maintaining accuracy of information for future retrieval and research 

Inventory Control: Conduct physical inspections of archeological collection to verify location and condition  

Handling and rehousing of slides: Review condition and location of negative slides and label and transfer them in appropriate storage to ensure future preservation 

Spreadsheet development: Create and maintain a comprehensive and organized spreadsheet of the negative collection and their relevant information

This position provides volunteers with an opportunity to contribute to the preservation of national parks, expand their knowledge of Camp Nelson, and to learn valuable skills in museum archival work and storage as well as data collection for the continued preservation of the archeological collection at Camp Nelson and the future accessibility of our collection to visitors and researchers.  

Additionally, as of January 1st, 2007, a volunteer’s time can be counted toward a Volunteer America the Beautiful Pass, which provides free entrance into federal fee areas for one year. Volunteers become eligible for the Volunteer Pass once they have accrued 250 volunteer hours.
