Olympic National Park Campground Host- Staircase Area

Olympic National Park is recruiting a volunteer campground host to serve in the Staircase area of the park. Hosts are frontline representatives of the National Park Service (NPS) and provide customer service, information and assistance to visitors camping in the park. Campground hosts assist with picking up trash in campsites after checking out. Campground hosts must be friendly and approachable, as they are often the only NPS representatives a visitor may encounter during their stay. Hosts are expected to deal with repetitive questions, handle emergencies and manage conflicts in a positive manner throughout the summer. Schedules are determined by supervisors, and all hosts must volunteer a minimum of at 32 hours a week if occupying a trailer pad. This opportunity is also open to those who may want to commute to Staircase and in that case, there is no minimum hour’s requirement. The season at Staircase is from May through September but we will consider those who may not be available for that whole time frame.

Staircase campground is in a remote part of Olympic National Park. To access this part of the park volunteers must travel FS 24 Road, which is an 8-mile unpaved road along the shore of Lake Cushman. This opportunity would not be suitable for folks with large RVs greater than 30 feet due to the challenges of navigating FS 24. There is no cell service in this area; the nearest signal is near the Mount Rose trailhead approximately 4 miles away. However, the area is powered 24/7 by a generator and residents have been able to successfully use satellite internet providers such as Starlink.

The campground has 49 campsites with some of those being walk-in (walk to sites). Staircase campground is on a reservation system in the summertime, and the campground host would assist visitors who need information about reservations or other camping opportunities nearby if the campground is full. The host campsite is not within the campground itself but in the employee housing area (a short walk from the campground) and for that reason the campground host will staff the nearby Staircase Ranger Station information desk. The host would also help with parking congestion in the area and communicate information to staff about where parking is available during times of high congestion. Hosts must operate handheld radios with multiple repeaters and channels. There are no golf carts available at campgrounds, so walking long distances during inclement weather is required to perform these duties.

In exchange for their volunteer work, we provide this volunteer with a campsite in the Staircase area which includes water, electricity, and sewer hookups. There is access to a shared laundry room. Campground hosts are required to have a self-contained RV, trailer, or van.
