Work Camper - Gila National Forest 2026

Volunteer Work Camper – Glenwood Ranger District, Gila National Forest 

The Glenwood Ranger District of the Gila National Forest is seeking volunteer Work Campers to support the operation of developed recreation sites and campgrounds while providing quality customer service to forest visitors. 

Work Campers play an important role in creating a safe, clean, and welcoming environment while serving as representatives of the U.S. Forest Service. Volunteers work closely with district recreation staff to enhance visitor experiences and help care for public lands. 

Duties may include, but are not limited to: 

Working a minimum of 24 hours per week with weekends required. 

Greet Forest visitors with pertinent local information and reminders of the Forest Service rules and regulations. 

Work Campers also inform the public about camper safety, answer questions related to local recreation opportunities, and report compliance and maintenance problems to appropriate Forest Service personnel. 

Work Campers are required to keep a daily log of visitation numbers as well as be able to open and close access gates at designated times when determined necessary. The ability to conduct light maintenance, such as monitoring restrooms, picking up ground litter, general painting, and  minor vegetation management (such as weed-eating), is required of all Work Camper positions. 

Volunteers are not to act in a law enforcement capacity. Volunteers must be prepared to work under varied conditions, including inclement weather.  

Work Camper volunteers are responsible for the routine and deferred maintenance of grounds and facilities within developed Forest Service recreation sites and/or conducting routine service and repairs to Forest Service tools and equipment. Work Camper volunteers may work alone on specifically assigned projects or may work as part of a team to identify the maintenance needs of a site, including, but not limited to: general landscaping, mowing, weed-eating, hedging, painting buildings, kiosks, curbing and railings, sweeping sidewalks, stairways, replacing and installing signage, removing litter and debris, maintaining dumpsters, removing graffiti, cleaning up abandoned campfires and emptying fire grills.
