Position Title:
Maintenance Coordinator – Water Point, Dump Station, Trash Monitoring, and Maintenance Support Volunteer
Duty Location:
Quartzsite Long‑Term Visitor Area (LTVA) and associated 14‑Day Camping Areas
Quartzsite, Arizona
Purpose:
Support LTVA and nearby camping areas by helping keep facilities functional, clean, and safe. Assist with daily operations, minor repairs, supply delivery, and communication with BLM staff to maintain positive visitor experiences.
Major Duties
Facility Maintenance & Operations
- Conduct daily chlorine testing at the potable water station.
- Perform routine maintenance at water points, dump stations, and trash areas.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety at service sites.
- Complete minor repairs (hose nozzles, vault toilet parts, dump hoses, etc.).
- Deliver supplies to Contact Stations as directed.
- Report maintenance needs requiring additional attention or contractor support.
Volunteer & Public Interaction
- Represent BLM professionally.
- Model proper LTVA resource use and compliance.
- Support and communicate effectively with volunteer teams.
Knowledge & Skills
- General maintenance and repair skills.
- Effective verbal communication.
- Ability to work cooperatively with diverse volunteers.
Supervision
- Volunteers work under the LTVA Park Ranger or assigned BLM staff.
- Tasks are assigned with instruction; routine work may be done independently after training.
- Complex or unusual issues are referred to staff.
Training Provided
- BLM and LTVA orientation.
- Safety and emergency procedures.
- Training in chlorine testing, minor repairs, and maintenance standards.
- Optional training: radio use, defensive driving (if authorized), environmental safety.
Volunteer Duty Limitations
Per BLM Manual 1114, volunteers may NOT:
- Perform law enforcement or carry firearms.
- Engage in hazardous duties (firefighting, hazmat response, helicopter operations).
- Perform policymaking, regulatory, or adjudicative work.
- Conduct legal land research or technical determinations.
- Replace BLM employees.
- Access sensitive or confidential information.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Outdoor work in desert conditions at LTVA sites.
- May require lifting, carrying supplies, and performing minor repairs.
- Volunteers must disclose relevant physical limitations.
Tools & Equipment
- Radios, phones, safety gear, tools, and supplies may be issued.
- Personal property may be used only with approval.
- Government vehicle use requires authorization, valid license, and completion of BLM driving requirements.
Schedule & Commitment
- Flexible schedule set with supervisor.
- Hours recorded on BLM Form 1114‑4 or 1114‑5.
- Notify supervisor of schedule changes.
Safety Requirements
- Follow safety briefings and procedures.
- Report injuries, incidents, or unsafe conditions immediately.
- Be aware of desert hazards (heat, wildlife, remote travel risks)
Evaluation & Recognition
- Long‑term volunteers may receive a performance evaluation (Form 1114‑1).
- Recognition may include certificates, appreciation events, or similar non‑monetary awards.
