Luminary Prep Volunteer 2026

Wilson's Creek National Battlefield is continuing the tradition of the Memorial Luminary this November.

This annual event commemorates all soldiers who were wounded, captured, missing, or killed in combat during the second major battle of the Civil War.

The park is seeking volunteers to assist with prep work like assembling paper lanterns, set-up, and other tasks. Applicants may participate in any or all of the prep sessions.

In late October and early November, the park team will host the following scheduled prep sessions:

• Saturday, October 10
• Sunday, October 18
• Saturday, October 24
• Sunday, November 1
• Other dates TBD.

Each standard prep window will run from 1 pm to 4 pm on the above dates. Staff will train volunteers to assist with preparing luminary lanterns. This may include testing batteries and flashlights and assembling lanterns from wooden boards and paper bags. If you are not available for the full session, let us know.

We are looking for 15-20 volunteers per session to help with assembling luminary parts.

In addition, depending on weather forecast and volunteer interest and ability, volunteers may be able to assist with some site prep on Saturday, October 24, Sunday, November 1 and other dates closer to the Luminary. Please contact us for additional information.

This is a great opportunity for families, youth organizations, school clubs, and individual high school and college students looking for volunteer hours.

Assembling luminary parts may be tedious work requiring concentration. Other conditions can also include standing, walking, bending, and kneeling on uneven terrain if involved in outdoor event prep.
