Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument (SAPU) is looking for Volunteers-in-Parks (VIP) to support this year's Dark Sky Programs! We are an innovative and fast-paced park looking for passionate VIPs to join our Dark Sky Programs by supporting ranger-led activities such as sunset Guided Hikes, Telescope Viewing and Photography Workshops, and assisting with event prep and break down.


Designated as an International Dark Sky Place in 2016, Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument is excited to welcome visitors and volunteers to the park after hours to experience the park's exceptional dark skies!

As a Volunteers-in-Parks (VIP), you will professionally represent the National Park Service by,


  • Following directions from Event Incident Commander (IC) first, then other NPS staff. 
  • Staying with your designated Volunteer “Buddy.” 
  • Knowing the site and event plan. 
  • If able to, assisting with event set-up and event breakdown as directed by IC and NPS staff. 
  • Advising visitors about potential hazards, including low visibility, obstacles, and wildlife. 
  • Directing visitors to always stay on the trail.
  • Assisting with directing vehicle traffic to designated parking areas.
  • Assisting with presenting the telescope viewing activity to visitors.
  • Assisting with presenting the dark sky photography workshop to visitors, if requested.
  • Answering visitor questions about event and locations. If not able to, contact IC and NPS staff.
