Engineering with Nature (Native Plant Landscape)

Engineering with Nature (EWN) Volunteer Position

I am looking for serious inquiries only for Summer 2027 (beginning of April to beginning of October).

Purpose

Support the park’s Engineering with Nature reforestation project by helping maintain the 8.5-acre reforestation site. Volunteers will support the establishment of native plants through site maintenance, trail upkeep, invasive species management, native plant restoration, and public education while preserving habitat for wildlife and pollinators.

Minimum Commitment

• Minimum of 24 hours per week per volunteer
• Must be able bodied and able to withstand extreme Florida weather (heat, sun, humidity, etc.). This position will require bending, shoveling, and lifting of equipment.
• Communicate with the Ranger Supervisor regarding the expected weekly schedule and provide updates as needed. Scheduling may be more flexible due to weather, heat, and site conditions.
• At the end of each month, submit volunteer hour sheets to the Ranger Supervisor.
• Volunteers may be asked to assist with EWN-related field trips, educational programs, or other events

Responsibilities

a.     Perform routine maintenance around planted trees, including selective weeding around tree bases to reduce competition from unwanted vegetation.

b.    Hand weed native flower beds to reduce invasive species and weeds that may negatively affect established native species

c.     Assist with transplanting established native plants and new growth to expand and restore native wildflower beds throughout the site.

d.    Maintain the walking trail by weed eating vegetation growing along the trail logs and edges as well as removing unwanted vegetation growing on the trail

e.     May be trained on the zero-turn mower and/or the Polaris UTV. Trainings will be provided by the Ranger Supervisor prior to use. Will be responsible for keeping equipment clean and well-maintained.

f.       Answer basic questions from visitors about the EWN reforestation site, native plants, wildlife habitat, pollinators, and ongoing restoration activities.

Knowledge on Florida native and invasive plant species is a plus but is not required. Ranger Supervisor will provide training as needed.
