(FY27) Visitor Services Volunteer

Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument is one of the newest National Park Systems in the country, having been established as a National Park site in 2020. The history of this park stretches back even further, having been run by the Mill Springs Battlefield Association for 30 years before the National Park Service. This national monument tells the story of the Battle of Mill Springs on January 19, 1862, and its significance to not only the local community but the Civil War on a national level. At this park and in this role as a Visitor Center Volunteer, you will get the opportunity to help shape the experience of our visitors while working alongside National Park Service employees and other local volunteers to provide customer service and general orientation.

The current greatest demand for volunteers is for Saturday and Sunday shifts.

DUTIES

• Create a welcoming atmosphere by greeting visitors and callers.
• Provide excellent customer service and accurate visitor information.
• Staff the front desk alongside National Park Service staff.
• Answer repetitive questions about park orientation, recreation activities, and the history of the battle itself.
• Provide guidance to the public on rules and regulations.
• Provide guidance to the public on the use of the park driving tour and travelling to the two historic homes on the south side of the lake.
• Maintain familiarity with the history of the battle as well as interpretive programming being offered by National Park Service staff.
• Become acquainted with National Park Service staff and programs.
• Keep work area and Visitor Center tidy and presentable to the public.
• Providing Interpretive programming based on personal interest and research at the site.
• Other duties as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

• Preferred previous experience in customer service and/or visitor information.
•  Comfortably stand/sit in one location for long periods of time.
• Commit to at least one (4-hour) shift per week.
• Read, understand, and interpret park maps and other printed materials and accurately communication information to visitors.
•  Communicate effectively with park staff and work as a member of a team.
• Arrive ON TIME at the proper location for volunteer duties, as agreed upon ahead of time by the Volunteer Coordinator.
• Wear an official volunteer uniform (provided) for the duration of volunteer duties.
• Behave in professional, courteous, and safe manner while representing the National Park Service, especially when in the presence of park visitors.
