Are you looking for a fulfilling outdoor experience? Join us as a Volunteer Campground Host at Bird Island Basin Campground, located along the beautiful Laguna Madre at Padre Island National Seashore. This area is perfect for fishing, birding, windsurfing, and kayaking!



Ideal candidates are outdoor enthusiasts with strong communication skills and a willingness to learn. Customer service experience is a plus!


General Duties:

  • Welcome and assist campers with registration, provide information, and maintain accurate records.
  • Make regular rounds to monitor compliance, update records, and report any law enforcement issues to PAIS Dispatch.
  • Educate visitors on park rules, assist after hours when needed, and serve as a positive example by maintaining your own campsite.
  • Coordinate your schedule with the Volunteer Supervisor and log volunteer hours consistently.
  • Perform light maintenance, report hazards, and respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • Wear the NPS volunteer uniform, follow safety protocols, and help create a safe and enjoyable environment for all.

Availability:

The following dates have open availability. Only apply for this position if you are available for dates within the following date ranges.

  • October 1, 2026 - February 1, 2027
  • June 1, 2027 - September 30, 2027


Commitment:

As a camp host, you must be readily available to assist campers. There is a minimum of 32 hours per week commitment to volunteer for this position and a minimum 1-month stay (max 3-months). This position requires you to possess your own RV or camper. 


Note: Bird Island Basin Campground does not have any electricity, water, or sewer hookups. A RV dump station and freshwater fill-up is located at the entrance of Malaquite Campground approximately 4 miles away. 


Physical Requirements & Health Considerations:

  • Camp host volunteers must be able to stand, sit, and work for extended periods of time.
  • This position requires you to work in varying weather conditions including elevated temperatures, sun exposure, high humidity, rain, wind, etc.
  • Must be comfortable walking on uneven terrain.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be comfortable taking supervision and feedback.
