Visitor Services (Interpretation) Volunteer Opportunity: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is looking for local residents who are lifelong learners—people passionate about Hawaiian culture and history, natural resources, and the dynamic volcanic landscapes that shape this unique place. This volunteer opportunity is ideal for those who love connecting with people and sharing knowledge about the park’s rich history and natural resources.

Volunteers at the Welcome Center serve as vital links between the park and its visitors, offering friendly, informative, and safety-conscious assistance to guests from around the world. This position emphasizes volcanic safety education, interpretation of natural and cultural resources, and excellent customer service.

Primary Responsibilities

• Greet and welcome visitors to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park with aloha.
• Provide essential safety information about the hazards of visiting and recreating in an active volcanic area, including potential exposure to volcanic gases, unstable terrain, and sudden changes in conditions.
• Assist visitors with questions about planning their visit.
  • Share information about hiking trails, ranger programs, road closures, and general park orientation.
• Perform opening and closing procedures and help maintain a clean and professional front desk area.
• Help track visitor statistics and provide feedback to park staff.
• Develop and provide 30 minutes to 1 hour ranger led programs to connect visitors with park resources at overlooks and trails.
• Can comfortably hike distances up to three miles.

What We’re Looking For

• Training: The park will provide a required one-week training for all selected volunteers. Training dates and times have not yet been determined and will be scheduled based on the availability of those selected.
• Work Schedule & Commitment
  • Volunteers must be available for full 8-hour shifts (no partial days).
    • Shifts occur during regular visitor center hours, generally between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., 7 days a week.
  • Commitment is a total of 32 hours per month, typically 3–4 days per month.
  • Housing is not provided. This opportunity is recommended for local residents.
• Customer Service Skills: Strong customer service skills are essential for this volunteer role. Volunteers must be friendly, approachable, and able to communicate clearly with people from diverse backgrounds. They are expected to handle repetitive questions with patience and professionalism, ensuring every visitor feels welcome, informed, and safe.
• Communication: Must be confident and courteous when speaking with the public for extended periods. Volunteers should be able to convey safety and interpretive information clearly.
• Reliability & Punctuality: Volunteers are expected to arrive on time for scheduled shifts. Advance notice is required for schedule changes or absences.
• Curiosity & Motivation: We value volunteers who are eager to learn about Hawaiian culture, native ecosystems, and volcanic science—and who enjoy sharing that knowledge with others. Prior experience in customer service, education, or public engagement is a plus.
