Lighthouse Groundskeeper

Help care for the grounds of the historic Cape Hatteras Light Station!

First built in 1870, and famously moved in 1999 from the threat of beach erosion, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is one of the most iconic lighthouses in the world. In 2025 the National Park Service began a massive restoration project to protect and restore key elements of the lighthouse, including restoring the grounds of the light station to their natural state- including the planting of native grasses and plants.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore is looking for volunteers to help the native landscape take root by actively weeding and maintaining the new landscape. Basic groundskeeping will also be needed along the new multi-use path connecting the Light Station with the village of Buxton and on area hiking trails. Local volunteers are encouraged to apply and can donate as little as 1 hour per week.

Volunteers needing housing, including RV spots can be given free housing with a 32hr/week commitment.

Uniform

• A uniform is provided for this position.
• Volunteer must wear closed-toe footwear.
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as needed to perform assigned tasks.

Physical Demands

• Requires standing for long periods of time.
•  Work requires light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs.
