Description
We are looking for volunteers who are interested in making a commitment to take two hours out of their day every other Tuesday to collect water samples as well as In-Situ data from two springs at the park.
Camp Nelson National Monument Water Quality Testing Volunteer position provides essential scientific
data to the Resource Management department to ensure long-term health and stability of the park’s
springs and groundwater. By conducting regular field assessments, volunteers provide the park with the
information needed to track the trends, health, and possible threats to our springs and groundwater.
This is primarily an outdoors position where the volunteer would walk/hike approximately half a mile to
the springs to collect and sample spring water. The volunteers will receive training from the resources
division of Camp Nelson National Monument.
Duties
Field Data Collection: Hike/Walk to the designated spring and groundwater sites to conduct
standard water quality testing
• Technical Measurements: Use and calibrate tools to measure and record pH, temperature, E. coli,
and other standard water quality information
• Equipment Stewardship: Calibrate, clean, and maintain tools and equipment provided to ensure
equipment longevity and accurate data collection
• Data Submission: Accurately record all field observations and submit completed data sheets or
digital logs to the Resource Department or designated location

collection for the health and prosperity of the natural environment on which Camp Nelson rests.
Additionally, as of January 1 st, 2007, a volunteer’s time can be counted toward a Volunteer America the
Beautiful Pass, which provides free entrance into federal fee areas for one year. Volunteers become
eligible for the Volunteer Pass once they have accrued 250 volunteer hours.
