Presidio Interpretation Volunteer

Description 

The Presidio is a former military post located within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Today, it is a vibrant national park site where historic buildings, cultural landscapes, and open spaces come together to tell stories of service, change, and community.  

At the Presidio Visitor Center, volunteers create a welcoming first impression by helping visitors orient themselves, discover what the park has to offer, and connect more deeply with its history and significance. Interpretive Volunteers play a crucial role in shaping the visitor experience—often serving as the first and sometimes only point of contact visitors have with National Park Service staff. 

Through both visitor center engagement and roving interpretation on the Parade Grounds and Tunnel Tops, volunteers help bring the Presidio’s history to life while ensuring that all visitors have a safe and fulfilling experience. 

Duties 

• Staff the Presidio Visitor Center, providing accurate, friendly, and engaging information to visitors
• Serve as a welcoming first point of contact, helping visitors plan their experience and connect with the park
• Rove the Main Post Parade Grounds and Tunnel Tops to engage visitors and share the area’s history and significance
• Support park operations, including assisting rangers and maintaining visitor spaces
• Research, develop, and present interpretive programs on topics of choice following guidance from NPS staff
• Share diverse cultural and historical stories from the Presidio, such as the stories of Buffalo Soldiers and Nisei servicemen to earlier Spanish and Mexican eras
• Use interpretive techniques to foster meaningful emotional and intellectual connections
• Assist with special events and projects as needed
• Track and report visitor interactions during each shift
• Participate in trainings and educational opportunities, including radio use and interpretive skills
• Perform additional duties as needed, such as site stewardship or operating a government vehicle (if applicable)
