Bandelier Visitor Center Volunteer

Time Commitment: 

Individual volunteers from the local commuting area are asked to contribute 4 hours a week.  

This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity.  

Specific duties include 

•       Staff the front desk by greeting visitors, answering questions, giving directions, answering phones and restocking the brochure rack.

•       Monitor and stock informational materials, brochures, and Junior Ranger Books. 

•       Rove trails, Main Pueblo Loop & Tsankawi Loop trails providing information as needed.

·      Operate two-way radio equipment when necessary

·      Monitor and assist with traffic when parking lots are full

Requirements: 

 On-site orientation, training, and a uniform will be provided and required to wear while on-duty. 

Physical Demands & Work Environment 

Standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, lifting of moderately heavy items, and sedentary work is required. Work is performed outdoors and indoors. While outdoors, the volunteer may be subject to working in adverse weather conditions, uneven terrain etc. 

Personal Contacts 

The volunteer has daily contacts with the visiting public, other volunteers, park staff, researchers, and concessions staff. These people represent a cross section of the nation and of other countries of the world. Visitors are of all ages, and from all social, ethnic, and economic groups. Volunteers have contact with park visitors for the purpose of providing information about area facilities, services, activities and recreational opportunities. Public contacts occasionally include dealing with visitor complaints and conflicts, although these should be referred to the ranger on duty.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & AREA INFORMATION 

Located on the slopes of the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico, Bandelier National Monument is a 33,000+ acre monument established to protect the Ancestral Pueblo sites found here. Bandelier includes a designated wilderness area of 23,267 acres and an 800-acre detached archeological section. The Monument preserves numerous archeological features of a late prehistoric period, which represents the transition of the Pueblo Indians from the prehistoric Ancestral Puebloan to modern traditions. Annual visitation exceeds 200,000. Bandelier is located 45 miles from Santa Fe, 32 miles from Espanola, and 12 miles from Los Alamos. The terrain is rugged but beautiful, from 5,300 to 10,199 feet with headquarters located at 6,000 feet. Summers are hot with afternoon thunderstorms being common in late summer. For more information, see the park website: www.nps.gov/BAND.
