Mammoth Cave National Park - 2027 Campground Host

Campground Hosts assist with the daily operation and maintenance of park campgrounds, support visitor services, and help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors. Hosts may also assist in other areas of park operations as needed. Volunteers may serve individually or as a two-person host team. All Campground Hosts are required to live on-site in the designated host campsite.

Duties include:

• Staff the campground fee booth at the park’s main campground.

• Provide customer service to campers, perform check-ins and check-outs, and process registrations using a government-owned computer.

• Rove the campgrounds to monitor visitor safety and campground conditions; report issues to appropriate park staff.

• Direct traffic to overflow parking areas during heavy visitation.

• Perform light maintenance and custodial duties.

• Assist with other needs, such as answering visitor questions by phone or in person, assisting in the visitor center, and supporting backcountry patrol.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Conditions and Physical Requirements

The work is generally active and ranges from easy to moderately strenuous. Volunteers must be able to:

• Safely lift up to 20 pounds.

• Stand, walk, or sit for extended periods.

• Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather and temperatures.

• Walk on uneven ground and perform routine bending, stooping, and kneeling.

• Interact with a high volume of visitors daily, especially during the summer season.

On-Site Living Requirements

• Volunteers must reside in the campground at the assigned Campground Host site for the duration of service.

• Volunteers must provide their own RV.

• The RV must be legally compliant, insured, in good working condition, and must fit the Mammoth Cave Campground Host site. The host site accommodates RVs up to 40 feet in length and is a back-in site (not a pull-through).

• The park provides a fee-free RV campsite with full hookups (water, electric, sewer), a picnic table, and a fire ring.

Team Applications and Hour Requirements

• Pairs (2-person team) of volunteers may apply for the Campground Host position (separate applications for each person must be submitted).

• The primary host is required to serve a minimum of 32 hours per week, and the secondary host is required to serve a minimum of 18 hours per week.

Background Check and Identification Requirements

• All campground host volunteers must complete and pass a federal background check as part of the onboarding process.

• Volunteers offered the position are required to present valid, government-issued identification to verify identity prior to appointment.

• Acceptable forms of identification are defined by federal guidelines; see the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services list under Form I-9 Acceptable Documents (USCIS).
