Visitor Center Volunteer

Position Duties: As a uniformed Volunteer-in-Park (VIP) with the National Park Service (NPS), the VIP serves as a front-line representative of the agency working in the Interpretation & Visitor Services Division. VIPs will work with Interpretive staff, Eastern National staff and other VIPs to support visitor service at the Apollo Visitor Center at Canaveral National Seashore. These activities may include greeting visitor, orienting visitors to the park, assisting campers, providing park information, answering the phone and more. Required training will be provided. This will include an introduction to the park grounds as well as the history of the park.

This position is ideal for students in both high school and college who are looking to gain work experience in a national park and earn volunteer hours. Candidates can work both during the summer months as well as while enrolled in classes during the school year. If you are retired or in between careers and enjoy helping people, then this may be a good fit for you too.

Requirements: VIPs are required to wear the provided park uniform (including a VIP shirt) and represent the NPS by acting in a courteous and professional manner with visitors, park staff, and other VIPs. Candidates should have the ability to work with others, patient and answer repetitive questions. Experience with or knowledge of the stated duties above are a plus.

Work Environment: VIPs work indoors primarily and may be outdoors if needed and may be exposed to a variety of weather conditions.

Physical Demands: Walking, bending, standing and may be sedentary at times.

Training: The supervisor will provide an orientation to the site, its mission, and staff. The VIP will get on-the-job training.

Other comments: Most visitor center volunteers sign up for a 4-hour shift once a week. Visitor center volunteers also have the opportunity to assist with larger events and education programs. This is a great way to begin your involvement with the National Park Service. Volunteer for as many days as you need to earn school volunteer credit hours.
