Source: Publicly Sourced

Do you consider yourself an astronomer (professionally or self-taught)? Are you excited by dark skies? Would you love to lend your expertise to an official International Dark-Sky Park throughout the summer?

Well you're in luck!! Chaco Culture NHP is looking for some skilled assistance in maintaining our nighttime equipment. We are looking for someone to help with some basic maintenance tasks (sweeping, dusting, cleaning the astro storage shed and dome of cobwebs) and also some harder maintenance work. Tightening or restringing the observatory cable (instructions can be provided) will involve climbing on ladders, wearing proper PPE (work gloves, hard hat), and also may involve some prior knowledge and expertise about the operation of observatories/domes. You will be called on to provide recommendations for improving equipment, getting replacement gear, purchasing additional supplies, all to aid in the improvement of Chaco's public nighttime programs and star parties. You may also be asked to move equipment from outside to storage, or vice versa - so the ability to lift heavy equipment is a must.

This work will take place during the daytime. Unfortunately there is no park housing available for this position, but there is a free volunteer campground nearby. If you plan on staying overnight, please inform your volunteer supervisor at least one week before your intended overnight stay to check on campground availability. As an added perk, you may even be allowed to use the park telescopes for your own personal use at night!
