We are looking for two adult people (example: couples, siblings, etc) for a host opportunity in Haugan, Montana at the Savenac Historic Tree Nursery. The compound is a former Forest Service tree nursery now being used as a low-key visitor center and museum with self-guided interpretive trails and four cabins available for rent to the through the Cabin Rental Program. The site is located with easy access to Interstate 90.
This is a fun position that offers a variety of tasks and a chance to work with other great volunteers. Work is approximately 28- 32 hours a week per person, with two to three days off; some consecutively. RV pads with full hookups are available.
Duties include:
· Ground maintenance includes lawn mowing, weed eating, watering and fertilizing.
· Monitor and stock all rental facilities.
· Inspect facilities before renter’s departure.
· Staffing the visitor center/museum. (typically, 1 to 2 days per week)
· Maintenance of equipment and minor maintenance work and painting
We encourage all our volunteers to take time to venture out and take advantage of recreation opportunities in western Montana, most popular are the Hiawatha Bike Trail, Bison Range, Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park.
The nursery was founded in 1907 producing 12 million seedlings at its peak. Nursery operations concluded in 1969. The site was designated a National Historic Site in July 2000, and is one of the oldest, largest and most beautiful Forest Service tree nurseries in the West. The site also had a Civilian Conservation Corps camp and is commemorated by a life-sized bronze CCC worker statue. It is one of two in the state of Montana. The site includes a living memorial of spruce trees dedicated to the firefighters that lost their lives in the Big Burn of 1910 fire. Beautiful Savenac Creek runs through the compound.
